This is a summary
of the major findings that I have drawn from the annotated
bibliography on Domestic Violence research
that was drawn up by Professor Martin Fiebert. (In a previous
version of this page, I referred to the version of the bibliography
that was present on the page http://www.landwave.com/family/ , but that
page appears to have since been taken down). I have made judgement calls
based on my understanding of the various annotations, but I am not making
any claims about the correctness or otherwise of the annotations, or
of the conclusions made in the pieces of research themselves. Some of
the pieces of research are surveys summarising the research then extant,
so some studies may in effect have been counted more than once.
A few individual studies are about
specific ethnic groups, or about the reasons why women are abusive,
etc., and have been ignored for the purposes of this overview. Homicides
have also been ignored -- both because there is an important difference
between intentional homicide and violence that unintentionally causes
death, and also because I found one of the annotations on homicides
unclear.
(N.B. This overview is not being updated, whereas the Annotated Bibliography
which it summarises is being updated.)
